Chapter Four
"You did good kid"
As Daniel looked at the face of the man talking to him through the rear view mirror and simply sat in silence.
Turning in the passenger seat to look at Daniel directly in the face he continued. "I know why you passed up the opportunity to go for those easier targets along the way. You knew we were following and wanted to prove your tough enough to take on a real match. Am I right?" He asked as he lent back and playfully punched at Daniel.
Daniels eyes had followed the man's face from the mirror to there in front of him. His expression never changed while he listened to the male talking. "Yeah I know I was being followed and I don't like being mistrusted."
"Hey Danny boy it's not about mistrust at all. The boss just needed to know you could do the job" Holding out his hand towards Daniel he grinned "So let's see how much you got shall we?"
Taking the money out of his back pocket that he had taken from Chris wallet he thrust it into the males hand "Well I still see it as he doesn't trust me and if that's the case then maybe I should just walk away now rather than have to keep jumping through hoops"
"Watch it Danny boy. I like you but you start with that smart mouth of yours and I might just have to help you shut it" Turning to face forward he counted the money Daniel had just placed in his hand. "Not bad, not bad. You would have gotten more robbing the old guy though."
Daniels eyes once more moved up to the rear view mirror to watch the male as he counted the money out "Why would I want to hit an old person?"
"For the money Danny boy. In our line of work sentimentality can get you killed if you can't hit an old dude"
"I can hit anyone I need to, but if I don't need to hit someone who can't defend themselves I won't. It's not about being soft it's about having a moral code"
Laughing at Daniels words the male turned glaring at him. His eyes seemed to have changed from the dark hazel that had looked back at him before to almost entirely black. "A moral code. Do criminals have moral codes Danny boy?" As his eyes slowly seemed to return to hazel he smiled and it reminded Daniel of the sorts of smiles you see on a crocodile just before it strikes "Speaking of hitting. You seem to have quite the right hook. Maybe sometime soon we can spar a little. You prove your any good I can help you get into much better business that all this petty stuff we do. You feeling me"
Daniel simply nodded as the car slowed to an almost halt. Looking out the window they were at the end of his block and he knew why they were dropping him off here and not at his door. This way they can deny ever knowing him or seeing him if they dropped him off at his door and a neighbour saw, not so easy to deny. Opening the back door he went to step out of the car
"Hey Danny boy. We'll see you soon"
"Yeah" He replied as he slammed shut the door.
Stepping onto the pavement he zipped his jacket up and pulled his collar around him. The night had settled in and with it a coldness in the air that nipped at him sightly. Glancing behind as he walked slowly down the block the car was still sat there, the occupants watching his every move. "For fuck sake" He mumbled to himself knowing that they were probably either going to be there all night so he couldn't get out, or at least be there till they knew he was safely tucked up in his home then leave.
Addison stood on the roof top not far from Daniels home and when she saw the car pull up and Daniel get out she simply shook her head. She had hoped he would arrive home alone so she could check up on him but as it stood she would have to go for the plan B she had formulated. Taking the note she had written earlier out of her pocket she carefully folded it and held it discreetly in her hand so it couldn't be seen, then moving to the edge of the building she jumped allowing herself to de-materialize mid-air and materialize on the pavement just over the road from where she had been. Placing her hands in her coat pockets she began to walk briskly down the block towards Daniel.
Daniel had his head down as he continued to walk towards his home. He was listening for the car starting up, hoping it would pull off so he could run to a phone and call the marshals.
"Hey watch where the hell your going kid"
Looking up his eye widened as there before him stood Addison King. As she slipped something into his hand before walking past him mumbling something about god dam kids he turned to watch her walk off. He had no idea how the hell she had got here before him, the car he was in hadn't stuck to any speed limits, but with that car now sat watching him it wasn't like he could shout out after her and ask her how she'd done it. Instead he simply turned and continued to walk. his eyes glancing down at the piece of paper she had slipped into his hand when she had bumped into him.
Walking past the car Addison noticed the window was slightly down so continued to mumble about how the youth of today had no manners. When she rounded the corner she flattened herself against the wall and listened. The faint sound of a male voice laughing about how Danny Boy needed to keep his eyes open when he walked, let her know that those in the car were none the wiser about what had really just happened.
Daniel continued walking to his property without looking up again. Running up the stairs that lead to the main door he glanced up just at the car started to pull away. Entering the building as if nothing had happened he closed the door and lent against it, before opening his fist and looking at the piece of paper Addison had slipped to him. Opening it he began to read what had been written.
'Your in danger in that gang. As soon as you can go to the safe house we took you to last year. One of the squad will be waiting there for you.'
Closing his fist once more around the note he let out a deep breath. Part of him wanted to run there now but he knew the chances were that car hadn't completely gone and so trying to go would be stupid. All he could do for now was sit tight and wait for the right moment to make his way there.
